The New York State Bar Association’s Law Referral and Information Service, or LIRS, is a service that assists people in their search for legal help. LIRS operates a phone service that people can call to seek out legal help. In addition to the phone service, LIRS has recently come out with an online portal for people who are searching for lawyers. The online portal can be reached at https://nysbalris.legal.io/.
When you go onto their website, you will fill out a confidential questionnaire that will ask about your situation and your location. The questionnaire will be reviewed the State Bar Staff, and you will be referred to an attorney that is in your area. Referrals are free, though there is a fee of $35 for the first 30 minute consultation between you and the referred lawyer. Fee-wise, exceptions are made if the case involves unemployment, workers’ compensation, veterans and military law, medical malpractice, social security or personal injury. You are not required to retain the lawyer after the first consultation. If you do decide to retain the lawyer, any future fees will be decided between you and the lawyer.
